Sustainability Transition – Community Opportunity
We support community based renewable energy co-operatives at every stage of their development, guiding them through the legal process of setting up a co-operative, advising them on their dealings with state agencies, introducing them to our network of co-operatives where they can learn from best practice examples, helping them communicate their message locally and nationally.
ECI has worked with dozens of Irish sustainable communities and has established five fully operational energy co-operatives many of them are seen as exemplars in the sector. Many of the communities we’ve worked with have become innovators within and promoters of the carbon-free society at the local level – and in some cases, the national level.
Energy Co-operatives Ireland is involved in developing renewable energy sources in Ireland. We are particularly focused on green hydrogen production and community ownership of renewable energy projects. We are also involved in Photo-Voltaic energy and offshore wind projects.
Energy Co-operatives Ireland is at the forefront of the development of a sustainable green hydrogen economy on the island of Ireland. We are putting communites at the heart of this opportunity: in reasearch, deployment opportunites and ownership of projects (see some of our projects in our research page)
We are a co-operative renewable energy consultancy promoting community access to the benefits of renewable energy. Our membership comprises of renewable energy experts, experienced co-operative regulations advisers, an expert project managers, financial advisers and a highly skilled communications and media team. Energy Co-operatives Ireland has an open democratic structure. We support co-operatives that have as wide a community membership as possible and seek to distribute benefits to the community as a whole. We have been successful in assisting community co-ops at every stage of their development from their first public meeting to the successful processing of a planning application and their sourcing of finances to bring the projects to reality.

ECI was a key early partner of Fuinneamh and has contributed tirelessly to its development which includes an inward investment of over €3m in energy conservation measures accross the three Aran Islands. ECI has helped make Fuinneamh one of the standard bearers of community involvement in the transition to low carbon
ECI has brought Tralee RE Co-op through every step of the way of co-op formation. It has also helped us to explore the wide range of technology development opportunities in Ireland in the Renewable Energy Sector. We are moving ahead with the roll-out of torrefied fuel boilers next year.
ECI have been very informative on communicating events occurring nationally and we know Cormac has worked considerably to promote energy Co-Ops throughout the country.
