Aran Co-op Renewable Energy Tours

Sep 13, 2014 | Co-ops News

Comharchumann Fuinneamh Oileáin Árainn now offers tours on the islands to demonstrate the progress they have made towards carbon neutrality by 2020.

The tours which, led by Co-op chairperson Dara Ó Maoildhia (right of picture) take in the extensive energy conservation measures that Fuinneamh has carried out on the three islands, to the tune of approximately €2m to date, with the help of the SEAI’s BEC scheme, and the installation of micro-generation. Dara also will discuss the Islanders’ plans for a significant jobs rich development to establish commercial scale energy generation on Inis Mór with the support of a large energy user employer the aim to attract there.

Inis Mór’s innovative community-based recycling scheme run in partnership between Comharchumann Forbatha Árainn and Galway County Council (pictured here) is also a fascinating element in this tour which offers a concrete demonstration of the positive opportunities open to communities ready to engage with the transition to low carbon.
