Green Hydrogen

Jul 13, 2020

Energy Co-operatives Ireland is at the forefront of the development of a sustainable green hydrogen economy on the island of Ireland. We are putting communities at the heart of this opportunity: in research, deployment opportunities and ownership of projects (see some of our projects in our research page)

We are a founder member of the German-Irish Hydrogen Council and are actively building partnerships in German industry which will be a key to the decarbonisation of heavy industry.

There have been rapid improvements in the efficiency and longevity of hydrogen electrolysers. This makes green Hydrogen (i.e. produced using renewable energy only) a practicable solution to our transport, heating and energy storage needs.

We are involved in three H2 research projects HUGE, SEAFUEL (on behalf of CFOAT), GENCOMM, and GreenHysland. We have also carried out an extensive feasibility study into the viability of generating H2 for heating and transport applications on Valentia Island. All these projects are based on the community energy model. This puts citizens at the centre of technological developments.
